COMMON NAMES, African ginger, B1 ginger, Race ginger.
Ginger was long known as Zingiberis and the Greeks had imported the rhizome from the east for centuries before Dioscorides described its medicinal uses. In the Far East it had also long been employed. In China it was, and still is, and important drug, and Green Ginger in syrup was a delicacy from the 10th Century. Ginger is now grown commercially throughout the tropics from Australia to Jamaica. The Spanish were importing ginger from Jamaica before the mid-sixteenth century, and Jamaican ginger is still considered the best for culinary use.

CONSTITUENTS - Volatile oil to 3% comprising camphene, phellandrene, zingiberine, and many other substances, resin, starch, gingerol, shogaol – the latter two substances being pungent, protein, Vitamins A, B-complex, C, calcium phosphorous, iron, sodium, potassium, magnesium. Sparingly soluble in water, soluble in alcohol.

Large doses should be avoided by people suffering from skin conditions (hot stomach e.g peptic ulcer (creates a sweat). Excess use any overheat the stomach. If using externally combine with a demulcent due to rubefacient action. there is a theoretical herb-drug-interaction between ginger and warfarin
