GINGER

BOTANICAL NAME, Zingiber officinal

FAMILY NAME, Zingiberaceae

COMMON NAMES, African ginger, B1 ginger, Race ginger.

HISTORY

Ginger was long known as Zingiberis and the Greeks had imported the rhizome from the east for centuries before Dioscorides described its medicinal uses.  In the Far East it had also long been employed.  In China it was, and still is, and important drug, and Green Ginger in syrup was a delicacy from the 10th Century.  Ginger is now grown commercially throughout the tropics from Australia to Jamaica.  The Spanish were importing ginger from Jamaica before the mid-sixteenth century, and Jamaican ginger is still considered the best for culinary use.  

TRADITIONAL USES

Muscle sprains.

Chilblains.

Prevents travel sickness (infusion).

Fights off colds and flu.

Removes congestion.

Clears sore throats.

Upset stomach and indigestion.

Flatulent colic.

Heating effect on stomach.

Morning sickness.

Skin cleanser (3-4 tbsp in bath water).

Cleanses system through perspiration (tea).

Continuous gastritis

Travel sickness.

Chinese Medicine– Shen jiang for edema and abdominal bloating.  Restores yang.

GROWING

Perennial creeping plant on thick, ruberous rhizome.  Flowers are greenish, marked with purple spots.  Cultivated plant.  Propagated from rhizome cuttings, planted on rich, well-drained loamy soil.

CONSTITUENTS - Volatile oil to 3% comprising camphene, phellandrene, zingiberine, and many other substances, resin, starch, gingerol, shogaol – the latter two substances being pungent, protein, Vitamins A, B-complex, C, calcium phosphorous, iron, sodium, potassium, magnesium.  Sparingly soluble in water, soluble in alcohol.

GENERAL

Ginger blocks the breakdown of pepsinogen to pepsin, which irritates the tissues and causes peptic ulcers.  Taste is strongly pungent and aromatic.  Odor is characteristic.  Character is pungent dry hot yang warming stimulant stomach & lung

COMBINATIONS

With olive oil and honey for external applications.  Ginger and capsicum work together for bronchial congestion and stuffy noses.  Added to meat dishes to helps the intestines detoxify the meat.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

Large doses should be avoided by people suffering from skin conditions (hot stomach e.g peptic ulcer (creates a sweat).  Excess use any overheat the stomach.  If using externally combine with a demulcent due to rubefacient action.  there is a theoretical herb-drug-interaction between ginger and warfarin
