ROSEHIP

COMMON NAME, Dog rose

HISTORY

The dog rose was so common throughout Europe that it has generally been treated with familiarity and contempt.  Pliny thought Britain was called Albion because it was covered with the white rose (laba meaning white).  The epithet “dog” originated from the supposed ability of the dog rose root to cure mad dog bites, or rabies.  Rosehips have been used as a tart fruit from earliest times and became medically important during the 2nd world war as a rich source of Vitamin C, containing twenty times as much as oranges.

TRADITIONAL USES

Relieves cramps and headache.

Common cold – aids the body’s defences against infection.

Leaves used as a poultice for sores and wounds.

General debility and exhaustion.

Eases constipation (leaves).

Culinary use in conserves and jams.

GROWING

Wild, climbing, trailing prickly perennial shrub growing to 3m tall.  Aromatic, large flowers either pink or white appear mid to late summer and are followed by 15mm long fleshy, scarlet false fruits (hips).  Grows best on   there is a line missing here.

 CONSTITUENTS

Contains vitamins B, C, D, E, K & P, tannin, pectin, carotene, fatty oil, high in organic iron and calcium.  Contains some sodium, potassium, sulphur, silica and niacin.
